Mughal Nobles Asad Khan & Khan Jahan Portrait Engraving, Valentijn, c.1726
A refined and historically significant early 18th-century copperplate engraving depicting two Mughal dignitaries: Asad Khan (Assedchan) and Khan Jahan (Chan Djehaan). Presented as a pair of oval bust portraits on a single sheet, this composition originates from François Valentijn’s monumental publication *Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën* (1724–1726), one of the most important Dutch works documenting Asia and the East Indies.
The engraving was executed by Wouter Jongman (1712–1744), a skilled Dutch engraver known for his precise linework and balanced compositions. Each figure is rendered in profile within a geometric frame, emphasizing clarity and dignity. The sitters are shown wearing elaborately wrapped turbans and traditional court attire, with fine detailing visible in the textiles, jewelry, and facial features.
The upper portrait depicts Asad Khan, a prominent Mughal statesman, while the lower portrait shows Khan Jahan, another important noble figure within the Mughal imperial court. These images were part of Valentijn’s section “Levens der Groote Mogols of der Keizeren van Hindoestan,” which aimed to introduce European audiences to the rulers and elites of the Indian subcontinent.
The composition is particularly appealing for its symmetry and pairing, offering both historical depth and decorative balance. The strong geometric framing combined with the oval portraits creates a visually engaging piece that works well both as a standalone artwork or as part of a curated wall of early global portrait engravings.
