Antique Hand-Colored Engraving “Nieuw-Zeelanders” (Maori), Early 19th Century
A beautifully hand-colored ethnographic engraving depicting three Māori figures of New Zealand, titled “Nieuw-Zeelanders.” The scene presents a richly detailed portrayal of traditional Māori dress and ornaments. The standing figure is wrapped in a feathered cloak and holds a taiaha-style weapon, while the woman beside him carries a woven basket and wears carved adornments. A seated figure in a flax rain cape completes the group, adding depth and narrative to the composition.
