Elegant Victorian Society Portrait – Vanity Fair Gladys Countess of Lonsdale 1883
This elegant Vanity Fair chromolithograph titled “Gladys, Countess of Lonsdale” was published on October 6, 1883 and drawn by the French artist Carlo Pellegrini, who worked for Vanity Fair under the pseudonym “Ape.” The portrait depicts Lady Gladys Herbert, Countess of Lonsdale (1859–1919), an admired figure of late Victorian aristocratic society.
The composition presents the Countess seated gracefully in an upholstered armchair, wearing a refined black evening gown typical of the fashionable styles of the 1880s. Her dress, with its fitted bodice, lace details, and long flowing skirt, reflects the understated elegance favored by aristocratic women of the period. Lady Gladys Herbert married Hugh Lowther, the 5th Earl of Lonsdale, one of the most prominent British aristocrats of the late nineteenth century. The Earl was widely known for his wealth, sporting interests, and patronage of boxing and other athletic competitions, while Lady Gladys herself became recognized within elite society circles for her beauty and refined presence. Together they represented the glamour and influence of Britain’s upper class during the height of the Victorian era.
