This original 1932 chromolithograph from The National Costumes of Holland by Gratiane de Gardilanne and Elizabeth Whitney Moffatt captures the distinctive dress of Volendam’s women and children. The image, based on drawings by Rie Cramer, depicts two mothers with infants and a young girl in festive Sabbath attire, all clad in the iconic seven-coloured skirts (zevenkleurige rok), blue aprons, and detailed lace caps known as “bul” or “bulletje.” Each figure's dress reflects deep-rooted Dutch traditions, with careful attention to embroidered aprons, net fichus, starched cotton pinafores, and vibrant knitted scarves. The scene’s charm is heightened by the background of traditional Dutch tile motifs featuring sailing ships.
Published in a limited edition of only 500 for commercial sale, this rare costume plate is a vivid testament to Dutch folk heritage.
