Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft – Dutch Golden Age Poet, 19th-Century Lithograph
This refined 19th-century hand-colored lithograph features Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft, one of the most celebrated literary figures of the Dutch Golden Age. Born in 1581, Hooft was a poet, playwright, and historian whose work helped shape Dutch language and literature. Often referred to as the Dutch Tacitus, he served as bailiff of Muiden and was a central figure in the Muiderkring, a circle of artists and intellectuals.
The portrait shows Hooft in richly detailed 17th-century attire, standing with an elegant yet intellectual presence. His ruffled collar, flowing cloak, and poised gesture suggest both literary accomplishment and aristocratic dignity. Classical columns in the background reinforce his connection to humanist ideals and the cultural flowering of the era.
