Pastoral Landscape from Virgil’s Eclogues — Samuel Palmer Heliogravure, 1883
This delicate 19th-century heliogravure titled Eclogue III was created after the English artist Samuel Palmer (1805–1881) and published in 1883 for the literary work An English Version of the Eclogues of Virgil. Issued in London by Seeley and Company, the print forms part of a celebrated series of illustrations accompanying Palmer’s translation and interpretation of the classical pastoral poems attributed to the Roman poet Virgil.
Samuel Palmer was one of the most distinctive figures in British Romantic art. Closely associated with the circle of William Blake during his early career, Palmer developed a deeply poetic vision of the English countryside. His work is known for its luminous landscapes, quiet rural symbolism, and dreamlike atmosphere, often blending classical pastoral themes with the scenery and spirit of rural England. In his later years Palmer devoted considerable time to translating and illustrating Virgil’s Eclogues, producing a series of images that reflect his lifelong fascination with pastoral poetry and idyllic landscapes.
The scene in Eclogue III presents a tranquil rural landscape rendered with subtle tonal gradations characteristic of the heliogravure process. Trees, fields, and gentle hills create a harmonious pastoral environment, evoking the timeless countryside described in Virgil’s poetry. Palmer’s composition reflects the poetic dialogue and lyrical atmosphere of the original text, where shepherds exchange songs and reflections amid the calm beauty of nature.

“Tis gentle Phillis I love best of all,

Examples from this publication were typically printed on fine Alton Mill laid paper, a high-quality paper commonly used in illustrated books of the period. The small, intimate format of the plate enhances its character as a poetic illustration intended to accompany the text rather than function as a large independent print.
Today, Palmer’s illustrations to Virgil’s Eclogues are admired both for their literary association and for their place within the tradition of British Romantic landscape art.
Condition:
Good antique condition with light natural toning consistent with age. The print retains strong tonal contrast and clear text beneath the image. Any minor handling wear is confined to the margins and does not affect the image area.
Framing tips:
Because of its intimate size, this print displays beautifully with a generous mat in warm ivory or cream tones. A dark walnut or simple black frame provides an elegant contrast and highlights the delicate tonal qualities of the heliogravure.
