An original antique botanical chromolithograph depicting Garcinia mangostana L., the celebrated Mangosteen, widely known as the "Queen of Tropical Fruits." This exceptional plate was painted from nature by the renowned botanical artist Berthe Hoola van Nooten and published in the third edition of Fleurs, Fruits et Feuillages Choisis de la Flore et de la Pomone de l'Ile de Java, issued by G. Severeyns in Brussels around 1880.
One of the most desirable and decorative plates from the series, this composition beautifully illustrates the mangosteen tree with its glossy foliage, elegant pink and cream blossoms, mature fruits, and cross-sections revealing the fruit's distinctive white segmented flesh. The combination of flowers, fruit and botanical details makes this one of the finest tropical fruit illustrations of the nineteenth century.
Native to Indonesia, Malaysia and the wider Malay Archipelago, the mangosteen has long been prized for its exceptional flavor and rarity. Revered throughout Southeast Asia as the "Queen of Fruits," it remains one of the world's most sought-after tropical fruits. Berthe Hoola van Nooten painted her subjects from living specimens in Batavia (present-day Jakarta), combining botanical accuracy with remarkable artistic refinement.
Produced using the sophisticated chromolithographic process, the print displays exceptional richness of color and subtle tonal gradations, faithfully reproducing the original watercolor painting. Today, Hoola van Nooten's botanical plates are considered among the finest botanical chromolithographs of the Victorian era.
