This stunning hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts two remarkable plants: the Galbanum (*Ferula galbanum*), illustrated with its intricate umbels of flowers and thick root (Fig. 1), and the Hungarian Gentian (*Gentiana pannonica*), a near-threatened species with its vibrant, deep purple bell-shaped flowers (Fig. 2). Created as part of Friedrich Johann Bertuch’s *Bilderbuch für Kinder* (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1805, this artwork serves as both a scientific study and an artistic celebration of natural history.
Galbanum, historically prized for its medicinal resin, was used in ancient remedies and incense. The Hungarian Gentian, native to Central European meadows, is increasingly rare due to habitat loss, making this engraving not only an educational artifact but a tribute to botanical diversity.
The intricate detailing of the foliage, flowers, and root systems showcases the precision and artistry of early 19th-century scientific illustrations. Bertuch’s *Bilderbuch für Kinder* aimed to educate children on the wonders of the natural world, featuring over 1,200 engraved plates spanning a vast array of subjects, including plants, animals, and geography.
