Item Description:
This 19th-century hand-colored lithograph features Frederik Hendrik, Prince of Orange and one of the most important military and political leaders of the Dutch Republic during the early seventeenth century. Born in 1584 as the son of William the Silent, Frederik Hendrik served as stadtholder from 1625 to 1647, leading the army through key victories in the Eighty Years' War against Spain and helping secure the independence of the Netherlands.
He is depicted here in full ceremonial armor, standing with poise and authority. He holds a commander's baton in one hand, with his sword sheathed at his side. A plumed helmet rests on a draped table beside him, emphasizing his military role and noble status. His composed expression and upright stance reflect his leadership and legacy as both a warrior and statesman.
The print was drawn by Herman ten Kate and printed by P W van de Weijer in Utrecht. It is a fine example of Dutch historical portraiture from the mid-nineteenth century, with subtle hand-applied coloring and detailed lithographic shading.
