This striking group of four original hand-colored botanical plates comes from English Botany; or, Coloured Figures of British Plants, Third Edition, edited by John T. Boswell Syme and published in London by George Bell & Sons in 1902. The illustrations are based on the authoritative work of James Sowerby and J.E. Sowerby, whose depictions of British flora are celebrated for their scientific precision and refined aesthetic quality.
The set focuses on different species of Water-dropwort, plants belonging to the genus Oenanthe, long studied for their distinctive forms and wetland habitats. Depicted are Sulphurwort Water-Dropwort (Oenanthe silaifolia), recognizable by its upright stems and softly pink umbels; Parsley Water-Dropwort (Oenanthe lachenalii), noted for its parsley-like foliage; Hemlock Water-Dropwort (Oenanthe crocata), also known as Dead Man’s Fingers, a visually impressive but historically notorious plant due to its toxicity; and Fine-leaved Water-Dropwort (Oenanthe phellandrium), sometimes referred to as Floating Water-Dropwort, shown with its characteristic delicate foliage and aquatic root structures.
