A superb original antique botanical chromolithograph depicting Anacardium occidentale L., commonly known as the Cashew Tree. One of the world's most important tropical food crops, the cashew is instantly recognizable for its remarkable fruiting structure, in which the fleshy cashew apple supports the kidney-shaped nut attached beneath it. Native to Brazil, the species was introduced by the Portuguese to Asia during the sixteenth century and became widely cultivated throughout Indonesia, India and Southeast Asia.
The composition illustrates a fruiting branch bearing mature cashew apples, developing fruits, flowers and finely executed botanical studies of the reproductive structures. The striking contrast between the brilliant orange-red cashew apples, glossy evergreen foliage and distinctive nuts creates one of the most visually appealing fruit plates in Berthe Hoola van Nooten's celebrated botanical masterpiece.
The artwork was painted from life on the island of Java by the distinguished Dutch botanical artist Berthe Hoola van Nooten (1817–1892). It was published in her masterpiece, Fleurs, Fruits et Feuillages Choisis de l'Ile de Java, widely regarded as one of the finest nineteenth-century botanical publications devoted to the flora of the Dutch East Indies. Printed in rich chromolithography by P. De Pannemaeker of Ghent, this plate was issued in the third edition published in Brussels by Librairie Européenne C. Muquardt around 1880.
Today, the cashew tree is cultivated throughout the tropical world for both its highly prized nuts and its edible cashew apple. Its unusual fruiting habit and economic importance have made it one of the best-known tropical plants. This original antique print combines scientific significance with outstanding decorative appeal and is among the strongest fruit subjects in the Hoola van Nooten series.
