This vibrant hand-coloured botanical print from 1874 features two beautifully contrasted alpine plants: Potentilla ambigua (Yellow Cinquefoil) and Erodium petraeum (Rock Cranesbill). Issued in London by George Bell & Sons as part of the second series of Alpine Plants, this print showcases the rich diversity of mountain flora as seen through the lens of Victorian botanical artistry.
At the top of the plate is Potentilla ambigua, commonly referred to as Yellow Cinquefoil, with its sunny golden-yellow, five-petalled flowers and deeply lobed, palmate leaves. A hardy and widespread perennial found across European mountain ranges, this plant is beloved for its resilience and cheerful appearance in rocky habitats. The illustration captures its lush mounding habit and the brightness of its bloom with striking clarity.
Below it, Erodium petraeum*, or Rock Cranesbill, presents a graceful contrast with its rich violet-purple flowers veined in blue and dark centers. The delicately cut foliage adds an elegant texture, and the artist has carefully rendered the fine hairs on the stems and leaves for a lifelike effect.
