Marsh Tit with Nest Antique Dutch Bird Print by Sepp and Nozeman, c.1770
This delicately hand-coloured engraving titled Parus Palustris depicts the marsh tit (Poecile palustris), known in Dutch as the rietmees, in a beautifully detailed natural setting. Two birds are shown among slender reed stalks and a winding branch of alder, one perched mid-branch and the other in flight. At the heart of the composition lies a finely rendered nest woven tightly between the reeds, cradling a clutch of speckled eggs. The scene evokes the quiet intimacy of the breeding season in lowland wetlands, combining scientific observation with poetic charm.
The print originates from *Nederlandsche Vogelen*, the monumental Dutch ornithological series published in Amsterdam between 1770 and 1829. It was the first comprehensive study of the birds of the Netherlands and remains one of the great achievements of Enlightenment-era natural history publishing. The text was written by Cornelis Nozeman and Martinus Houttuyn, with illustration, engraving, and hand-colouring by the skilled Sepp family, especially Christiaan Andreas Sepp and his son Jan Christiaan Sepp.
Each plate in this series aimed to show birds close to life size and set within their natural environments, often including nests, eggs, and habitat-specific vegetation. This print is a perfect example of that approach. The warm brown and grey plumage of the marsh tit is rendered with subtle shading, and the fine strokes used in the rendering of the feathers, leaves, and grasses show the engraver’s technical finesse. The birds’ body posture and interaction convey a sense of movement and liveliness, reinforcing the naturalism of the composition.
Marsh tits are small, agile woodland birds often mistaken for willow tits but distinguished by their glossy black caps and sharper calls. They favour damp forests and marshy edges, nesting in holes and feeding on insects, seeds, and berries. This print captures not only their physical traits but also the ecological niche they occupy.
Condition report
Very good condition. Sharp impression with full margins and visible plate mark. Slight age-related toning and minor handling creases limited to the blank margin. No foxing, staining, or restoration. The colouring is fresh and detailed.
Framing suggestion
This print would pair well with a pale cream or soft green mount to echo the natural reed and leaf tones. A light oak or maple frame will enhance the botanical quality of the image, while a darker walnut frame adds a classical touch. Museum-grade glass and acid-free materials are recommended to preserve the paper and pigments over time. Ideal for display in a natural history grouping or as a refined standalone piece.
