This charming trio of hand-colored botanical engravings from 1902 portrays three species from the Ribes genus, renowned for their edible berries and distinctive foliage. The plates feature Ribes grossularia (Gooseberry), Ribes alpinum (Tasteless Mountain Currant), and Ribes rubrum var. sativum (Red Currant). Together they form a beautifully balanced composition illustrating both wild and cultivated members of this familiar fruit-bearing family.
The Gooseberry is delicately rendered with its lobed leaves, pale green berries, and characteristic thorny stems. The accompanying flower and seed details demonstrate its intricate botanical structure. The Tasteless Mountain Currant is shown as a more modest alpine species, bearing small clusters of reddish-purple berries and finely serrated leaves — a plant admired for its hardiness more than its fruit. Completing the set is the Red Currant, a domesticated garden favorite, depicted with its hanging clusters of translucent scarlet berries and broad, veined leaves, a perfect example of botanical elegance combined with horticultural charm.
