A finely engraved mid-18th century view of Guy’s Hospital in Southwark, London, engraved by William Henry Toms after a drawing by Robert West, and published circa 1738–1739. This elegant bird’s-eye perspective documents the early architectural form of one of London’s most important charitable medical institutions, founded in 1721 by the philanthropist Thomas Guy.
The composition presents the hospital complex arranged around a formal courtyard, reflecting the rational and symmetrical ideals of Georgian architecture. At the center stands the statue of Thomas Guy, sculpted by Peter Scheemakers and erected in 1734, serving as both a focal point and a tribute to the founder. Surrounding buildings are rendered with clarity and precision, showing the early phases of expansion, including the central range and projecting wings.
Beyond its architectural interest, the print offers a valuable historical record of the hospital’s original purpose—to care for patients deemed “incurable” and discharged from other institutions such as St Thomas’s Hospital.
