About this sheet
The Eagle Rocks on the Mississippi River, an original steel engraving of about 1850 from Meyer's Universum, lettered "The Eagle Rocks (Mississippi)". The lower margin gives the credit "Published for Herrmann Meyer" in New York and a copyright notice under the Act of Congress.
Steep bluffs rise at the left in layered rock, with a tall crag of pale stone at their summit, and a second wooded bluff stands to the right of center. A band of dense woodland runs along the base, and the ridge continues in a long line along the horizon. The river fills the foreground in a wide, still sheet engraved in fine horizontal lines, and a flat boat or raft with a low shelter lies on the water at the lower right. A tree stump and bare branches stand in the shallows at the left, and clouds drift across the sky.
The plate shows a stretch of the upper Mississippi, a part of the river that the series presented to European readers.
