Bird’s-Eye View of Naples – Engraving by Matthäus Merian the Elder c.1650
This antique print titled Neapolis offers a remarkable bird’s-eye perspective of Naples, Italy, as it appeared in the mid-17th century. The detailed copper engraving vividly captures the topography, street layout, city walls, harbors, and fortifications of Naples, nestled between the sea and surrounding hills. Numerous ships dot the Bay of Naples, reinforcing the city's historic role as a key Mediterranean port.
The engraving was created and published by Matthäus Merian the Elder (1593–1650), one of the most influential early modern engravers and publishers. Based in Frankfurt, Merian produced the monumental Topographia series, which included panoramic views and maps of cities across Europe. His work is distinguished by its meticulous detail and clarity, and many of his city views were among the most accurate of the time.
This view of Naples features a numbered key at the bottom identifying major churches, fortresses, and civic structures. The print emphasizes the dense urban fabric of the historic center, the harbor’s strategic layout, and the surrounding hills, some of which are fortified. Merian’s artistry not only documents the physical characteristics of Naples but also reflects the city’s political and economic stature in 17th-century Italy.
