About this sheet

This is the printed title sheet for a set of illustrations by the German artist Willi Geiger to "Eulenspiegel", the book by Werner von der Schulenburg. It is lettered entirely in a bold, angular Gothic script, printed in black with the initial capitals picked out in a warm gold: "Willi Geiger / Illustrationen zum / 'Eulenspiegel' / des Werner von der Schulenburg / Kunstverlag Victor Singer / Hamburg, Neuerwall 9". The large gold E of "Eulenspiegel" carries the whole design, and the broken, pen-drawn letterforms give the sheet the energy of a hand-lettered poster rather than a typeset page.

Willi Geiger (1878 to 1971) was a German painter and printmaker, well known for his etchings and book illustrations of the early twentieth century. Werner von der Schulenburg (1881 to 1958) published "Eulenspiegel. Ein Heidebuch" in Dresden in 1911, and Geiger also illustrated his epic "Judas" in 1914. This sheet was issued by the Hamburg art publisher Victor Singer from its address on the Neuerwall. The sheet itself is undated, and the date given here is an estimate based on the book and on Geiger's work for Schulenburg in these years.

The lettering is crisp and dense, and the gold has a fine granular sheen. It makes a striking piece of early twentieth century German graphic design, well suited to a library, a study or a collection of typography and book art, framed with a wide cream mat.

This is an original antique print, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
