Description: Plate : 'Maniere dont les Chingulais brulent leurs Morts'. (How the Sinhalese burn their dead.) This plate shows the Sinhalese custom of the burning of their dead. This original antique print is taken from 'Histoire des Voyages..', by Prevost ca. 1750. Engraving by Jan van Schley.

Artists and Engravers: Jan van Schley, Dutch engraver. Johan Nieuhoff (1618 - 1672) was a Dutch traveler who wrote about his journeys to Brazil, China and India. The most famous of these was a trip of 2,400 km from Canton to Peking in 1655-1657, which enabled him to become an authoritative Western writer on China.
